as is the case every year, i can't believe all this time has gone by, and so quickly. as seems to be the case year after year, i feel as though i've learned and grown more than ever before. i feel i finally think for myself and that all the opinions and beliefs i've developed now come from me. i made one of the best decisions of my life this year in heading to florida. i made lasting memories and relationships there and learned a lot about myself in the process. i've been happier this year than in years past, but i've also had some of the most sad days that I can ever remember. It's been a year involving a roller coaster of emotions, but I can say that the year is closing and leaving me feeling content. I am happy, and loved.
every year as the new year approaches i have the desire to be healthier, lose weight, etc etc etc. obviously, that is certainly in my mind now, but i'm hoping that yoga, kickboxing areobics, and aquatic fitness will work to keep me active. instead of heading in a physical direction, here are a few areas of me i'd like to work on in the coming year.
in 2009, I'd like to:
worry less about things i can’t control
learn to take more time to think about what i have to say, before i actually say it
have less dramatic reactions, especially when they aren’t warranted
stop planning ahead so much and enjoy what’s happening now.
hello, 2009.

here is my favorite christmas song. appropriate too, as it's christmas eve.
Greeting cards have all been sent
The Christmas rush is through
But I still have one wish to make
A special one for you
Merry Christmas, darling
We're apart, that's true
But I can dream
And in my dreams
I'm Christmasing with you
Holidays are joyful
There's always something new
But every day's a holiday
When I'm near to you
The lights on my tree
I wish you could see
I wish it every day
The logs on the fire
Fill me with desire
To see you and to say
That I wish you Merry Christmas
Happy New Year too
I've just one wish
On this Christmas Eve
I wish I were with you
I wish I were with you
Merry Christmas, darling
happy christmas.

blue christmas
here are our classy ring pictures at every park. enjoy:
so i think i'll copy kellie and highlight a few of my favorite happenings during our action-packed week in the world of disney.
1) as we were leaving ariel, she yelled 'have fun with your legs!' i still smile when i think about her clever-ness.
2) jasmine had a non-princess moment when she stated that she had never taken a picture quite the way i made her pose, and that got her started on a myspace and facebook tangent. facebook jasmine, really?
3) i accidentally almost gave jesse a black eye when my elbow met her face at epcot. it made for a good laugh later.
4) feeling jesse's death grip and hearing her scream as we dropped during the tower of terror.
5) basically i loved listening to anything that kala had to say during our entire trip. she was the life of the party and definitely kept me laughing. 'hey take my picture - i'm ready!' 'but i've never been to disney world!' 'i look good.' =)
6) while we were shopping and looking at an ariel snow globe, vinnie stated, 'isn't that neat. would it make your collection complete?' oh vinnie. you are so witty. i'm sorry josh gives you a hard time for your little puns because i love them. oh, and when vinnie said to kellie, 'do you know what 'no se' means in spanish?' and kellie answered 'i don't know.' vinnie was like, 'ok i'll just ask someone else.' bahahaha.
7) as we were posing in front of the castle flashing our rings (duh) this man walked by and said, 'i hope those aren't mood rings, otherwise you're all in a really bad mood.' aren't you funny, little man.
8) so this isn't a favorite happening (or else i'm a mean person) but i felt like it needed to be mentioned: we went all the way to animal kingdom so jesse could get her picture with safari mickey, but guess what? during the holidays, safari mickey actually dresses in christmas clothes. needless to say, jesse wouldn't get her picture with mickey.
9) kellie's face when the bridge 'falls' on the safari was priceless. and she knew it was coming every time.
10) we played dream squad and chose a family to distribute a few coupons to that we didn't have a chance to use. i loved it. even though the family anna echols insisted on picking had just been having a fight. but, as the girls pointed out, hopefully after the coupons they were in a happier mood and didn't fight as much.
11) on our first night in orlando we stopped at the wal-mart and they happened to have disney merchandise there. this one shirt read 'wake me up when it's over.' i didn't understand why you'd want your vacation to be over. but as the week progressed and we saw so many UNHAPPY people at the happiest place on earth, we'd kinda laugh and say, 'that's why they made that t-shirt.'
12) on our way down to florida i read 'would you rather' questions out loud and one of them involved replacing every 'l' and 'r' with a 'w' noise. we had quite the time all week talking in baby talk. 'weady to go to disney woooowd?'

returning to the most magical place on earth
check out the all snacks we have waiting for our trip to florida.
in light of returning to disney world for a visit in just three days, and in response to kellie's encouragement to blog again, here i am.
also, here's a little christmas cheer: a stocking at starbucks with my name on it - since i work there, you know.and some christmas lights hanging in starbucks, out of focus for effect.

Still Dreaming
I laughed out loud when I saw that my last post began with 'Well the heat has finally set in.' What a JOKE! I was so naive when I wrote that last post (and it was so long ago - for that, I apologize). It is merely the beginning of June and yet the heat is now undeniably miserable. Animal Kingdom makes the air feel that much more humid and sticky because of all the vegetation and rainforest atmosphere. I had no idea on April 11 what heat really was! Oh well, I'm not here to complain - but let's just say that I have never (EVER) sweated so much in my entire life. And that I have never (EVER) NEEDED a shower as badly as I do when I get home from work.
It seems as though so much has happened since my last post (as always). Our dear girlfriend, Lissette, went back home on May 16 when her program ended (the same day mine was intended to end). It was quite the SAD scene at the Orlando International Airport at 6:30AM in the morning - sobbing and such! Jennifer, another favorite of my girlfriends down here also decided to extend her program until August 15th - she switched from Safaris to Entertainment. Because we extended our programs, we were required to move to different apartments - and she is now my roommate in a beautiful and spacious one bedroom apartment! We love it and have worked hard to keep it classy!
I turned 21 since my last post! Whoohoo! My parents were down for a long weekend and we had a lot of fun relaxing and staying at two different Disney resorts. On my birthday night, six of my best friends here at Disney came out to dinner with my parents at Bahama Breeze. We really had a lot of fun. In fact - my parents will be down for a super short weekend THIS weekend! It's Father's Day and I have a few breakables to be taken back - I think they'll be in town for 30 hours!
I still love Safaris - in doses! I am currently missing my voice - as I do every week just before my 'weekend.' Talking all day really wears me out! I often find myself wondering if I should have transferred to a different location for the summer - just to try something new and air conditioned! But then I snap out of it and realize that I would COMPLETELY miss all the amazing people I work with and that I would probably end up with some AWFUL shifts until 3am and that my job is coveted by MANY at Disney. I know I'm where I should be.
I'll try to get better at this blog deal this summer. My hours are later now - we stay open until 7:30 - which means I'm not out until 9pm. YUCK. Could be worse, I know.
Miss you all!

so this is love...
well the heat has officially set in - but good news! i am not (completely) miserable (yet). ha! i put in my application to extend until august 15th and i'll find out sometime between April 14-24. i bought a wooden bead seat chair at wal-mart the other day to use on the kilimanjaro seats because (disclaimer - this is gross) - so many people have what we call swamp butt - sweaty, nasty butts that leave the seats SOAKED for the next person who has to sit in it to drive. there's nothing worse than finding out my next assignment - only to realize i'm taking over a truck from an old fat (but usually extremely nice) man on a 90 degree day. ha. kilimanjaro safaris now stays open until 7pm - so i'm usually not off until 8ish. we've been working really long days since spring break - going in at 8:15am and staying until 8pm makes for not much of a life right now! oh well - the people i work with make my job enjoyable no matter the hours or the weather conditions.
i've settled down with a few good girlfriends that i will be sad to see leave soon. lisette is from california - and i think i've 80% talked her into staying and extending with me. if she does, we'll live together for the summer. then there's jen from vegas - as of now she is leaving may 23rd - but everytime she hangs out with me and lisette, she leans more toward staying too! and sara is definitely here until august.
in other news my 21st birthday will be here in less than three weeks! both my parents are coming down (how strange considering they have both been down here separately - ha!) from friday the 25th until the 30th. dad came down for easter and we had fun doing things i haven't been able to afford to do on my own - dinner at fulton's crab house and the irish pub, etc. i even got to lay out on easter while dad watched the basketball games - and i managed to get absolutely FRIED. we had a really good time. anyway - dad's birthday is the 25th of april- so we'll be celebrating his birthday as well! they're staying at coronado springs for a few nights - and then we'll all stay at the animal kingdom lodge for my birthday. i'm super excited - and we already have lots of fun dinner reservations while they're here. i'm pretty sure that we're having a kilimanjaro black and white (zebra) party to celebrate my birthday sometime after the 30th!
i registered for classes at meredith yesterday - for the fall. and all my mcgs are living on the same floor next year so that is a plus for heading back to raleigh. i'm trying to decide where to work for the fall - any suggestions? i'll only have 12 hours and lots of free time - but i'm not really feeling working on the weekends =) starbucks is an option - but i kinda want to try something different. oh well - i'll think hard.
hope everything is going well at home - and that the semester is starting to quiet down! i only have three more of my classes down here - i will be so glad to be done with that!
love you all!

feels like home to me
so it has been such an incredibly long time since i have written that it was quite an ordeal to remember how to sign in to write again. even now, i feel that the only reason i'm writing is to avoid the homework that is due early tomorrow morning for my one and only class here. =) but in all actuality - i am absolutely never online or doing anything of the sort - no television (at all), no reading, etc. my new theory is that if i'm in bed long enough to be doing any of those leisure activities - i'm going to be sleeping.
my time here is absolutely flying by and i am still incredibly in love with everything disney. about a week ago i had a special college program meeting for animal kingdom at night - and after the meeting we were able to ride mount everest in the pitch black for about an hour straight. as the roller coaster was slowly edging us upward and we could see all the disney property below us - i was still in awe that i live here. it honestly feels like a REALLY long vacation. it is, at the very least, certainly a hiatus from reality.
i've been blessed with a few visitors in the last week and a half - maggie and whitney (from meredith) flew down for their spring break and we had a blast all staying in the hotel and park hopping. just a few days later, my mom and two of her girlfriends came down for a long weekend and i was able to play tour guide again. my dad will be down soon - for easter!
i'm trying to think of any happenings that stick out. i've made a family of friends at kilimanjaro - all the amazing people that i work with are what make my job so much fun. i can't even think about leaving these life-long friends in august. all i do is hang out with kilimanjaro staff when i'm not at work. we headed to universal a few weeks ago and had fun hopping from there to islands of adventure. i'm pretty sure a few of us are heading back there tomorrow after i'm out of my four hour (yuck) class. spring break crowds have moved in - and i'm sure they'll be steady until after mid-april. i still love driving the truck and seeing all the beautiful animals everyday - but it has already gotten a little warm for my taste - and i'm sure more is to come!
hopefully i will soon have enough free time to sit down and concentrate on writing more about specific or quirky happenings at work.
=)
i miss you all - but florida is feeling right!

a quick visit to wonderland
i finally did something super fun (other than working every day - because honestly (for the most part) - that's always super fun too!) last night. two of my roommates and i bought tickets to the PIRATE AND PRINCESS PARTY at the Magic Kingdom. when i first found out about the 'party' I thought it was lame that we (as cast members) have to pay to go, but it was definitely worth it - and i'm sure we'll be back! the event happens about twice a week from now until march. basically it was worth the money just to be there when the park was nearly empty! the event was from seven to twelve and i just wish it stayed open later. there was an AMAZING parade at 8:30 that started off all royal and princessy - and then turned dirty and pirate-ish for the end. so hot! tinkerbell was even in the parade as a face character. my roommates and i had fun dressing up like pirates. i mean, we already knew we're princesses - right? there was also a special fireworks show just for pirate/princess. AND - this event is the ONLY opportunity to have meet/greet (pictures) with JACK SPARROW - or, a very close look alike at least. ha! so much fun! we were exhausted once we got back since we had worked the day but it was definitely a lot of fun. in the middle of the fireworks show, my roommate melinda was like, 'ashley - i know we've lived here a month, but i just want you to know that we live in disney world.' it is still extremely surreal.
i flew home for two (quick) nights and was blessed to see several familiar faces. i flew in just to catch meredith faculty's performance of 'alice in wonderland' since it only happens once every four years and it was certainly worth it! mimi let me crash in her room for the trip and i saw my parents for a brief dinner just before i flew out. it was great to be back at mc - but i didn't know whether to feel like it was normal or not. i definitely felt out of place without my emmie around! the only bummer was that my return flight was 2 1/2 hours late so i didn't get back to orlando until about midnight. it worked out fine though - i didn't have to be at work the next morning until 11:45.
i had today off - as today was the first day of the one class i'll be taking all semester. it's offered by disney and called 'marketing you.' it's every wednesday from 8am-12pm. that is ENTIRELY too long. today went well though and she let us out a little early. melinda and i had lunch at olive garden and then i came back to the apartment and took my FIRST NAP since i've been down here in florida. my first nap in a MONTH! woah! i just never have the time. i had planned on sleeping in the sun today - since i do live in florida and yet i'm still as white as ever - but of course, on my one day off the sun decided not to be so sunny. figures.
i'm still loving kilimanjaro as much as ever. this week is weird as EVERYONE from new orleans comes to disney during mardi gras week to get away from the madness. that was news to me. it seems like every single one of my safaris is full of people from louisiana! on tuesday, the biggest day of mardi gras, i got lots of beads from my guests that were passing them out for fun. AND on tuesday i was able to choose the 'first family' for kilimanjaro which meant that i walked up to the front of the park before it opened and chose a family to ride on their own private safari - the first safari of the day. oh my goodness it was so much fun! i loved being able to actually get to know the family and find out more about them. but i did forget my nametag on tuesday so i had to wear a generic one we had sitting around kilimajaro - so i turned into 'marge' for the day. yuck! ha!
my mom is flying in on friday so that will be lots of fun. i have saturday off for sure and we already have reservations to the 'aloha show' at the polynesian resort on saturday night and at 'chef mickey's' at the contemporary resort on sunday night - which is dining with characters! yay!

disney: your vacation - my reality
i know, i know - it has been way too long since i've written!
i am officially a 'normal' employee of kilimanjaro safaris. in fact, i have been for an entire week. last friday i had my assessment - a manager and a trainer had to ride on my truck while i took guests a few times. surprisingly, i wasn't too incredibly nervous and i did fine during the whole day of 'testing.' friday night melinda (a roommate) and i went to pleasure island with a few of the guys who live in the apartment across from us. we went to the two 'clubs' that are eighteen and over - because melinda and i were the only two under twenty-one. one was a comedy club and the other was called 'adventurer's club' and it was set in the 1920s. i can't believe how many benefits/discounts come with working at disney. getting into pleasure island for FREE is a HUGE plus. i had saturday off and had planned on sleeping in because we had stayed out so late the night before, but my body wouldn't have it. melinda and i went to the company d at epcot - a store just for cast members that sell discounted tickets. that night melinda, mary catherine (a great girl from nc) and i saw '27 dresses' at the downtown disney amc theater. we get major discounts there too! it POURED that night - it felt like a hurricane!
i was nervous coming into work on sunday knowing i wouldn't have my trainer there to answer any questions i had, but the day went great. i absolutely LOVE working at safaris and wouldn't trade it for any job. i work with some really amazing people, and i haven't even come close to meeting them all yet. my voice does get super tired by the end of the day, and my shoulders are constantly in pain after being so tense from driving that TANK - but it's definitely worth it. monday and tuesday went just as well with very few slip-ups. i honestly cannot believe i see those AMAZING animals every day. on tuesday an ostrich stopped right in my path, so i had to call it in and warn my manager that i was stopped. the scariest stories are hearing that the white rinos often charge the trucks. i don't know how i'll keep my cool if that happens to me! i love knowing that each safari is different. you guys are going to be so impressed when you realize how huge this truck is.
on wednesday i went to animal kingdom on my day off with anna echols - she was a senior at meredith when i was just a freshman and we were tennis partners! she lives here in orlando while she's in culinary school. we went and rode my safari and all the other big rides at animal kingdom. i was able to snap a few pictures of my ride since i always want to take so many pictures while i'm driving! it was super crowded in the park that day, not to mention humid as heck - but we still made it fun. that night, melinda and i went with jon (from the apartment across from us) and some of his friends to see 'illuminations' at epcot. we had been before, but we were in an awful spot and couldn't see a thing. this time, jon used his connections (he's a boat captain at mgm and epcot) to get us down on the vip dock right beside the fireworks. it was so much fun and such a perfect night - cool outside without any clouds. we really felt 'magical' that night. ha.
on thursday i had another day off, so anna and i spent the day at mgm (now called 'hollywood studios'). it was the perfect temperature all day and much less crowded, so we were able to see a lot in the park. including the high school musical pep rally - yes! anna wouldn't ride 'tower of terror' with me so i rode it alone - and i instantly regretted it when i felt the elevator flying up. the day was really a lot of fun. last night melinda and i went to buffalo wild wings with the guys and enjoyed live music. we've really developed a bit of a posse.
i'm so exhausted after working today. i literally drove the truck ALL day - no land positions at all! my shoulders will ACHE in the morning. i think i might head to bed soon. i know, it's a friday night. our days are so messed up here - i'm so thrown off by having my days off be in the middle of the week.
on wednesday night i'm flying to raleigh until friday to see 'alice in wonderland' at meredith. i didn't think i would be able to make it, but at the last minute, safaris scheduled me off thursday and friday. so if you're around - please come see me!
i'm LOVING it down here. this disney community is so comforting - even though it is so large. there are ALWAYS new people EVERYWHERE to meet. i'm in at work at 8:15 tomorrow morning. yuck!

please be sure to store any loose articles you may have in the bins in front of you...
I feel like there's so much to write, but I'll never be able to tell you all everything I'm experiencing!
Basically, can I just tell you all that TODAY - Day 2 of my Kilimanjaro Safari Training - I took two trucks of people on their tour of the reserve. Driving and narrating and all! If you had told me YESTERDAY morning that I would be able to reel off that twenty minute dialogue while DRIVING a HUGE thirty foot long truck, I would have LAUGHED. I really lucked out with my trainer at KS (Kilimanjaro Safaris). Because she feels the speech and learning to drive are the hardest parts about this job, she's hardcore about starting out hands on. Yesterday I spent most of the day learning and memorizing the speech, and we drove the truck around the parking lot in the afternoon. First thing this morning I opened up a truck and I started driving the truck around the ride path over and over and over. It takes about eighteen minutes to complete the ride. After I felt (kinda) comfortable - or, as comfortable as I could feel - she drove while I practiced giving the speech to feel the timing. After lunch I started making the rounds doing everything - pointing out animals and providing facts about each while driving and when I thought we were almost done for the day, she told me she felt confident that I was ready for guests! I freaked! Holy cow! We ended up taking two loads of people and both went really well. I messed up a little, but it was nothing too obvious. I could go on and on and on but I am absolutely EXHAUSTED and have to be back at work bright and early! I'm sure my next few days will be a bit slower in action as I have lots of computer work to accomplish since I started all the fun stuff first!
I'll try to write more soon!

jambo
Oh my goodness the days feel so long! But I can honestly say that I absolutely LOVE living and working for Disney. I can't believe this is my life.
Wednesday was my four hour 'Traditions' class. In it we learned a lot about the history of Disney, the mission statement, and all kinds of odds and ends. We received our Disney nametags (which only have our first names and schools, because Disney works on a first name basis). So now - EVERYWHERE I go, if I'm wearing my nametag, people who work for Disney are like, 'hey ashley.' ha! Sadly, Disney spelled Meredith - 'Merdith' on my nametag. I'll have that changed asap because MERDITH sounds really hick-ish! At the end of this session, we (finally) got our Disney ids - which allows us free access and parking to any Disney theme park! As soon as we got back to apartments we (my whole apartment and a friend of mine's whole apartment) changed clothes (because we had to be dressed in only professional attire - we even had a 'disney look' check) and headed to Epcot. We rode Mission Space (i seriously almost threw up - if you ride it, opt for the easier ride. It's the only ride at Disney with barf bags), Test Track, and Soarin' (my new FAVORITE ride at Disney. It was seriously AMAZING - so peaceful and REAL!). We stuck around for the light show at the World Showcase at 9pm. We couldn't believe we were walking around for free!
I had yesterday off so a friend from Mass and I went to Animal Kingdom so I could ride the safari ride and re-familiarize myself. We rode it twice and the new Everest rollercoaster once - I'm still amazed that the safari is my JOB. Last night all of us roommates had dinner at the apartment and then a few of us rode to Wal-Mart (again). We met a new neighbor last night that has done the college program before, so we had lots of questions for him!
Today was a really fun day - but SUPER tiring! My DAKlimation (cute, huh? Disney's Animal Kingdom Orientation) began at 8:30 in AK, but I decided to ride the bus just to get used to where I'd be heading. I had to be on it at 7:07 this morning! It just seems like so much wasted time when it really only takes 10-15 minutes to drive there! During today's orientation we learned a lot about specifically the Animal Kingdom, and then took a 2 hour tour of the park. We walked 'backstage' a lot - we would just pop out of the woodwork back 'onstage.' Seeing the characters backstage without their heads on was a real shocker! At the end of our tour, surprise surprise - we all rode the safari ride together! Our guide this time was AMAZING. I hope i'm as good as him! We all ate lunch in the cast cafeteria - who would've thought they'd have food places JUST for the cast!? After lunch we went to wardrobe and tried on our COSTUMES! Once we found our sizes we walked away with five of each, a jacket, cold weather gear - and for my ride - an AWESOME belt with a killer buckle and the hottest hat ever. There were two guys in our group today who were also doing the safari ride - we were the only three! They both seemed really fun - I'm excited! The costume is definitely not flattering - as with almost all outfits at Disney - but I definitely love the hat. When I (finally) got back home - the bus ride back was long as well - one of my roommates and I (Melinda) checked out our apartment's pool and then headed over to Mickey's Retreat (walking distance from our complex) because we hadn't been. Cast members can bring friends and family to the retreat - there are two pools, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, grills, picnic table, and an amazing man-made beach with chair to to tan in. There's a lake with paddle boats and canoes. Oh man it was so pretty! Melinda and I each laid in a hammock on the beach and watched the sun set through the palm trees. Is this my life!?
If you can't tell, I'm loving Florida. The weather is perfect right now, a LITTLE chilly at night and in the mornings, but very warm during the day. Mom says my accent sounds northern - so I'll definitely have to work on that! Everyone's rubbing off on me. I met a lot of new people today that will be working in Animal Kingdom and that live in my complex. I'm really excited to be at AK because it closes so early - it's the earliest theme park to close. AND - my safari ride closes as soon as the sun goes down, meaning I'll always have my nights free! I have tomorrow off and I'm really looking forward to having lunch with Anna Echols from Meredith. It will be great to see a familiar face!
Sunday starts my OJT (on the job training) and hopefully I'll drive a truck right away! ha!

the dream that you wish will come true
it's now day two now of my disney experience, and while i felt a bit of hesitation moving in yesterday, everything seems to be falling into place. my parents and i spent a mostly relaxing weekend in orlando - although we did dare to brave the saturday crowds at sea world. we made a full day of it - and even walked away with a season pass for the year. i can go back anytime - and so can they! mine includes a season pass to bush gardens africa in tampa. i can't wait to try it out. we spent sunday in downtown disney, wrapping up our trip with dinner at house of blues.
yesterday morning we were among the first in line to register and had moved into my new apartment by 10am. i opted to live in the 'chatham' apartment complex. these apartments are newer, but are a little bit more secluded from the disney chaos. i chose a two bedroom apartment, meaning there are three other girls living here. melinda from illinois (chicago), lori from mississippi, and hannah from illinois. everybody seems to be pretty happy and the apartment is great. plenty of room.
and now for the drumroll. we just found out this morning exactly what our job would be and - i'll be working at the kilimanjaro safari ride at the animal kingdom! i am SO excited as this means i will be DRIVING the safari 'jeeps' (more like a BUS!) that DO NOT have tracks - all thew while giving the (long) narration about all the (live) surrounding animals. i honestly couldn't think of an attraction i would rather have. i feel so lucky and blessed to have landed such a fun ride. tomorrow i have a disney orientation (wherein i'll receive my disney id meaning i can officially enter the parks when i please) and the day off on thursday! i will definitely be riding the safari ride several times to see what exactly my job will entail! on friday i have an orientation of the entire animal kingdom, and then another day off on saturday. and sunday begins my week of safari ride training!
i'm really excited to learn my job and learn the faces i'll be working with. meeting a ton of people has proved difficult so far - but i'm sure once we're put into orientation groups and such, those pieces will also fall into place.
here's my address!

a dream is a wish your heart makes
In light of this (exciting) Disney adventure quickly approaching, I have decided that 'blogging' will be the most efficient way to keep you all informed.
We'll be driving down to Orlando on Friday, and there we'll spend the next few days relaxing at Sea World, City Walk, and Downtown Disney. I officially move into the Disney apartment on Monday. I will be sure to let you all know exactly what my job will entail as soon as I find out.
